Natural gas heavy-duty energy-saving and environmental protection

Zhou Yinchao, assistant general manager of Shaanxi Automobile Group and general manager of Shaanxi Heavy Truck Sales Co., told reporters that compared with diesel vehicles, the cost of natural gas heavy truck users is much lower. Statistics show that for every 100 kilometers traveled, natural gas heavy trucks can save 100 yuan in fuel costs compared to diesel trucks of the same tonnage, bringing significant economic benefits to users. In addition, the harmful gas emissions of natural gas heavy trucks are also lower than those of diesel vehicles. Among them, carbon monoxide emissions were 90% lower, hydrocarbon emissions 70% lower, and nitrogen and hydrogen compounds emissions 35% lower.

Zhou Yinchao said that Shaanxi Automobile Group undertook the research tasks of the national “863” plan “development of heavy-duty LNG commercial vehicles” and “assessment of single-fuel CNG vehicles among cities” and accumulated a lot of experience. In 2005, Shaanxi Automobile launched the CNG heavy truck on the basis of research and development of clean energy vehicles, and then pushed LNG heavy trucks, including tractors, dump trucks, trucks, cement mixers and other models.

Other domestic commercial vehicle companies have also been optimistic about the market prospects of natural gas heavy trucks, and successively launched natural gas trucks. During the Beijing International Auto Show this year, the products of the Taiyuan Chang'an Heavy Duty Truck Show were all natural gas heavy trucks. At present, domestic mainstream heavy truck companies basically have their own natural gas trucks. It can be said that natural gas trucks are rapidly moving towards the market.

Product performance gradually improved

Liu Keqiang, chief marketing officer of Shaanxi Heavy Vehicle Sales Co., predicts that sales of natural gas heavy trucks in China will reach 2,000 to 3,000 vehicles this year, which is not as large as traditional diesel heavy trucks. In this regard, the industry analysts believe that, first, the promotion of natural gas heavy trucks is largely limited by regional resources and geographical characteristics are obvious. In areas where natural gas resources are scarce, this model has almost no room for survival. Users who purchase natural gas heavy trucks can only use for short-distance transportation in areas with sufficient air supply. Second, due to the limitations of early technology, natural gas heavy trucks have insufficient power and shorter driving range. Third, the application of new technologies brings some security problems.

Shao Guoqiang, deputy general manager of Shaanxi Heavy-duty Truck Sales Co., Ltd., said: “The natural gas heavy truck technology continues to advance, and many problems that have plagued product promotion have now been resolved. From the point of view of dynamic nature and driving range, natural gas heavy trucks have been able to meet the needs of users.” Shao Guoqiang introduced that Shaanqi's natural gas heavy truck engine power can reach 279 kilowatts, and its power is not inferior to that of diesel vehicles. LNG heavy trucks equipped with a 450 litre storage tank can travel 500 kilometers, which is basically the same as a diesel car. If two 450-liter tanks are installed, the driving range can reach more than 900 kilometers.

"As far as the product itself is concerned, there is no problem in the use of natural gas heavy trucks." Shao Guoqiang believes that the low number of gas stations is the last difficult task for large-scale marketization of natural gas heavy trucks.

Expansion of gas station construction scale

“We have been communicating with relevant government departments and natural gas supply companies to vigorously promote the construction of gas filling stations.” Liu Keqiang said, “As a vehicle fuel, natural gas can reduce pollutant emissions, and the relevant government departments are promoting the use of such gas. The high enthusiasm for fuel is generally welcomed. We have signed cooperation agreements with some natural gas supply companies and plan to build gas stations in areas where natural gas heavy truck users are concentrated."

Only areas with sufficient air supply are suitable for promoting natural gas heavy trucks. Indeed, in provinces and autonomous regions such as Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, the promotion of natural gas heavy trucks is much faster than in other regions. However, this does not mean that natural gas heavy trucks can only develop in the northwest region. It is understood that CNOOC is stepping up efforts to build gas stations in the coastal areas and plans to build 60 gas stations in Shenzhen, Guangdong in five years. In the next three years, it will complete the construction of 30 gas stations in Zhuhai, Guangdong. CNOOC is currently planning to build gas filling stations in Fuzhou, Fujian and Zhongshan, Guangdong. Once the network of gas stations has been improved, the market size of natural gas heavy trucks will rapidly expand.

Liu Keqiang said that natural gas heavy trucks may have a rapid development in the near future. For this reason, Shaanxi Auto plans to increase the annual sales volume of natural gas heavy trucks to 50,000 within three years. "We are very confident in achieving this goal." Liu Keqiang said that the promotion of natural gas heavy trucks requires the support of relevant government departments and gas supply companies. The government should increase the coordination of the construction of gas filling stations, grant certain subsidies to users to purchase natural gas heavy trucks, and promote the use of energy-saving emission reduction products in a wider range.
