GE Introduces New VF-AFE Power and Propulsion System

· Reduce fuel consumption (SFC) by 15%
Apply traditional technology to non-traditional solutions, reduce changes to existing structures, extend maintenance intervals and reduce maintenance costs without increasing technical risk. Paris, France, May 7th: GE (ship hangar location) The Power Conversion business unit has released a new electric propulsion system (product library purchase supply) at the OTC, which reduces the fuel consumption rate by controlling the speed of the ship's engine (product library purchase supply). The variable frequency active front-end electric propulsion system (abbreviated as VF-AFE) enables ship owners to use traditional power system components to reduce engine speed, reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, and extend maintenance intervals.
Paul English, head of GE Power Conversion, said: "To make our customers more profitable, we are working to improve the efficiency of our existing technology. The VF-AFE system uses traditional power system components (main switchboard drives, etc.) to simplify operation. In the learning process of the method, the operator can use it with only a small amount of training. At present, when operating a conventional engine, the speed is always constant regardless of the load change. Therefore, when the load is reduced, due to the piston (Product library supply) still operates at unnecessary high speeds, which consumes a lot of energy and reduces efficiency. VF-AFE allows you to recover those lost efficiency."
When the supply vessel is operating in DP mode, only the effects of wind and waves are calculated, and the load on the engine is reduced. But to provide redundancy, all engines remain operational. This means that even if one engine stops working, other engines can keep the ship in place, but this arrangement is not the most efficient. With VF-AFE, all engines remain connected, but their speed decreases as the load drops.
Paul English explained: "We calculated according to specific working conditions, assuming a fuel price of $900/ton, an engine loading 50% of the rated load throughout the year, and a ship's installed power of 8 megawatts (MW), working 300 days a year. 24 hours a day, the ship can save up to $300,000 a year in fuel costs."
The active front end does not only drive the engine. Shipborne auxiliary equipment still requires a fixed frequency, which requires additional equipment to convert the variable frequency of the VF-AFE to a fixed frequency, so the customer must make additional investments. Even so, according to GE's estimates, customers can recover all of their investment in less than a year.
Paul English claims: "The solution is unique to GE and we have designed new solutions for the existing technology that our customers are currently using to increase the efficiency of existing technologies while ensuring that customers are easy to apply."
The GE Power Conversion MV 3000 low-voltage inverter (purchased from the product library) used by the VF-AFE has been modified to make the structure more compact. Paul English said: "This is a good illustration of GE's willingness to sum up experience and listen to customers. Customer feedback said that the MV 3000 is too large, so we have improved it. We have made the most of the existing technology. VF- Although the MV 3000 used by the AFE is an existing technology, it has been repackaged."
