STMicroelectronics Launches "World's Smallest" Digital Output 3-Axis Angular Speed Sensor

STMicroelectronics, an Italian-French joint-venture company, launched the digital output 3-axis angular velocity (gyroscope) sensor IC "L3G200D" in a 16-terminal LGA package measuring only 3.0mm x 3.5mm x 1.0mm. Manufactured using MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology. The company called it "the smallest in the world." Mainly used for mobile phones, tablet computers, portable game consoles, and home game console input components.

For the measurement range (Full Scale), the user can select from ±250 degrees/second (dps), ±500 dps and ±2000 dps. Sensitivity is 8.75mdps/digit (nominal) at full scale ±250dps, 17.50mdps/digit (nominal) at ±500dps, and 70mdps/digit (nominal) at ±2000dps. The sensitivity temperature error is ±2% (nominal). The Zero Offset is ±10 dps (nominal) at ±250 dps full scale, ±15 dps (nominal) at ±500 dps, and ±20 dps at ±2000 dps. The non-linearity is 0.2% FS.

The output data signal is a 16-bit digital value that is output via the I2C/SPI standard serial interface. The output data rate (frequency) can be selected from 95Hz, 190Hz, 380Hz, and 760Hz. Built-in temperature sensor, the measurement result is output with 8bit digital value.
