Wärtsilä launches new product GasReformer

Wärtsilä has introduced a new product, GasReformer, which uses steam recombination technology to convert associated gas into gaseous fuel for gas engines in the Wärtsilä range. GasReformer is another example of Wärtsilä's development of highly efficient products, while demonstrating Wärtsilä's ability to provide optimal solutions that combine environmental and economic benefits.
Wärtsilä GasReformer has received the Ocean Engineering Technology Expo (OTC) 2013 “Focus Award”. The award recognizes innovative products that have a significant impact on the exploration and production of offshore engineering. The principle of the award is that the product must be new in the marine engineering industry within two years, innovative, reliable, and attracting wide interest and appeal. A product that has made significant contributions beyond existing technology.
The Wärtsilä GasReformer is an innovative new product that enables the conversion of natural hydrocarbon-rich gases from oil production into methane-rich products for use in Wärtsilä dual fuels. The engine operates at full performance level. Traditionally, these gases are burned or wasted. Although the process of catalytic hydrogen conversion of hydrocarbons dates back to the early 20th century, Wärtsilä GasReformer represents a new product application in different fields than traditional processes.
“Waceland has extensive experience in the processing of gas fuel cells. This patented product is also the result of research work. It is also the embodiment of the company's ability to develop solutions that are both economical and environmentally friendly. The uniqueness of GasReformer It is capable of converting a gas containing undesired heavy fractions into methane. The process of converting exhaust gas into fuel significantly reduces the operating cost of the system while significantly improving the environmental sustainability. In some areas where combustion is prohibited. This product is especially important," said Tore Lunde, business director of Wärtsilä Oil and Gas Systems.
Associated gas utilization Associated gas generated during the oil production process is generally considered to be exhaust gas and is emitted into the atmosphere through combustion. The World Bank's Global Partnership for Combustion of Natural Gas Reduction estimates that approximately 150 billion cubic meters of natural gas is burned or emitted each year worldwide, causing approximately 400 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This is equivalent to 30% of the EU's gas consumption. The Wärtsilä GasReformer converts the associated gas into a stable mixture that can be used as a Wärtsilä fuel engine. This also means that this energy resource can be used for oil rigs and floating production, storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs) with high power requirements, although this resource has not been used in the past. In addition, since the fuel used in the past is marine diesel, after using GasReformer, marine diesel will almost no need to be filled. This will also directly bring significant cost savings.
