Heizmann: Unified charging standards are still a top priority

On January 13th, the two-day "China Electric Vehicle Hundred People's Association" is hereinafter referred to as the "Hundred People's Association" held in Beijing Diaoyutai. Although the "Hundred People's Association" is positioned in the private think tank organization, it includes the Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, The presence of many directors from the ministries and commissions such as the Ministry of Communications and the Energy Bureau, as well as the full appearance of domestic and foreign autos, energy companies, battery companies, and even companies such as China Unicom, Baidu, and ZTE, are sufficient to demonstrate the organization’s policy toward electric vehicle industry. Formulation and future development have an indispensable influence and are the “wind vane” for the development of the electric vehicle industry.
Undoubtedly, the top-level design of China's electric vehicle industry also needs to be in line with international standards. Opening to the outside world is one of the highlights of the 100-member conference. Executives of multinational corporations such as BMW, Toyota, Honda and Tesla have been appointed as members of the International Expert Committee of the 100-member Association. The members of the Volkswagen Group Board of Directors and the Volkswagen China CEO are even more Appointed as chairman.
Before the 100-member public speech, Heizman accepted interviews with four media including the 21st Century Business Herald. He made two suggestions in particular: First, China needs to develop a unified standard for charging infrastructure as soon as possible, mainly because there is no uniform standard for plugs and charging control systems for fast charging facilities. Second, it is hoped that all benefits will be under the same policy conditions. Relevant people can receive the same subsidies, including domestic and imported cars, to jointly promote the development of key new energy automobile industry.
Volkswagen brand C-class plug-in truck will be made in Shanghai "21st Century": You once mentioned at the Guangzhou Auto Show that the Audi A6L plug-in hybrid will be made in 2016, and then there will be another model, also plug-in hybrid In Shanghai Volkswagen, can you talk specifically about what kind of positioning this car is.
Heizman: In 2016, we will make the Audi A6L plug-in hybrid model. This model will be produced on the MLB (longitudinal engine module platform) with a modular production platform. Such a platform has become a big advantage for the Volkswagen Group.
On this basis, the Volkswagen brand will also apply the modular platform above Audi to the Volkswagen. The new model will be the same level as the Audi A6 C-Class, and we plan to have a new Volkswagen at this level. This model will be available in two versions, one for the advanced internal combustion engine and one for the plug-in version. This model is only produced in China and will be produced in Shanghai Volkswagen from 2016 to 2017.
"21st Century": What are the specific plans for Volkswagen's promotion of new energy vehicles in the Chinese market? What are the advantages? What is the difference between promoting new energy vehicles in other parts of the world and China?
Heizman: We have announced a timetable for the electric car event held in Shanghai. At present, there are plug-in hybrid vehicles, pure electric vehicles, domestic cars, and imported cars. The models include Class C and Class B, as well as SUVs. Brands including Porsche, Skoda, Audi, and Volkswagen brands will provide plug-in hybrid versions to customers. At the same time, we are also developing pure electric vehicles with longer cruising range. For example, the cruising range of electric golf can reach 200 kilometers. The next generation of electric golf, electric golf that will be launched in about 2 years, will reach a cruising range of about 300 kilometers. It can maintain the same level of volume and weight, but we will conduct further optimization tests on the battery. Audi also announced that it is developing electric vehicles with longer cruising range and sports electric vehicles.
You can feel our competitive advantage by test drive. Switching from electric mode to internal combustion engine mode is a very smooth process. You will also feel the advantages of using the engine and electric motor for acceleration.
In addition, we have developed a modular platform for electric vehicles and are further optimizing this platform. Typically this platform or system will be applied to the MLB platform, which is the platform for the vertical engine module, or the MQB transverse engine platform. Cost savings can be achieved by creating a synergistic effect, as different models can use the same platform. On this basis, we will provide different models and create synergies in research and development. These new energy vehicles can be produced in our existing plants and are produced in line with traditional models of internal combustion engines.
"21st Century": What are the biggest challenges facing the public in terms of new energy vehicles?
Heizman: The biggest challenge for Volkswagen is cost. At present, the technology of electric vehicles is a very expensive technology, so customers need to get government subsidies to buy electric vehicles. On the one hand, it is necessary to further reduce the cost of the battery technology, and at the same time, by further increasing the quantity or mass production, the cost can be further reduced. We hope that in the future, electric vehicles will reach the same price level as traditional diesel engines, which is the biggest challenge we face. In addition to cost challenges, there are of course technical challenges.
The charging standard can be borrowed from Europe. "21st Century": As the chairman of the National Expert Committee of the 100-members, what suggestions will you make on behalf of multinational companies for China's new energy development?
Heizman: I am very honored to be awarded as the chairman. I think such an initiative proves that the Chinese government holds a very open attitude and hopes that international automakers will propose in China to build a future direction. The Volkswagen Group has always been in a leading position in the Chinese passenger car market, which may be one of the reasons why I was awarded as a chairman today. I believe that we have the ability, technology and sufficient experience in the field of electric vehicles to become one of the leaders in the global market and the Chinese market.
As a chairperson, what role can be played? First, we need to have clear standards. Through clear standards, we will be able to invest in the right direction in the future, and we can achieve energy savings through proper investment choices. So we can make some suggestions on the standard, especially in terms of security. This also involves the safety of the car. If we don't need to consider the safety of the car or the safety of the crash, we can improve the cruising range of the electric car in a very easy and simple way. We need to ensure that the battery is installed and that the battery is not damaged during the impact.
I think we should understand that plug-in hybrids are the best solution in terms of short-term and medium-term, and perhaps the development of pure electric vehicles can be realized in the long run. In this regard, there will be a battery-related seminar, and we will also participate in the Chinese experts to discuss how to better promote the development of the battery. The Volkswagen Group has extensive experience in R&D around the world, so we have this technology and Volkswagen is ready to take the next step. In the development process of the internal components of the model, it is also necessary to consider how to further improve the energy-saving performance, which involves both the internal combustion engine model and the electric vehicle model.
"21st Century": Just now you mentioned the problem of the inconsistency of China's charging standards. Can you talk about it specifically?
Heizman: Mainly refers to the plug and charging control system does not have a unified standard, there are already standards in AC charging, but there is no uniform standard in fast charging. There are two aspects to consider. The first aspect is the layout of the plug. It is necessary to ensure that the layout of the plug can be connected to the socket at the end of the vehicle. At the same time, it is also necessary to take into account the standards and safety standards of the battery behind the plug. We all know that the current of fast charging is very high, so it will involve safety issues. First, we need to solve the safety problem to solve the high current charging. So in this regard we need to set standards that can be applied to all models, using such standards on all charging sockets and plug-ins to ensure safety. The easiest way for us is to adopt European standards, but other standards should be acceptable.
"21st Century": On the issue of charging standards, the German Chancellor Merkel of Tsinghua University attended the Sino-German electric vehicle charging project ceremony some time ago. Has there been any concrete progress since then?
Heizman: We have done a lot of work and made some progress in this area, but so far no unified standards have been established. Some proposals have been made so far, the problem is to see how long it takes to make the decision process, because the process is a decisive factor. A number of fast-charging infrastructures have also been introduced, such as many highways along the way, hoping to develop such standards as soon as possible.
"21st Century": Does the promotion of plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles in China so much mean that Volkswagen's fuel consumption in China in the future will be mainly based on plug-in hybrids?
Heizman: Volkswagen has introduced as many new energy vehicles as possible, because we need to reach a certain number of new energy vehicles to achieve the goal of balancing fuel consumption. But in addition to the measures taken in the case of new energy vehicles, we will take other measures, such as the measures of the traditional power engine models. For example, the number of MPI engines will decline further in the future, and the number of TSI engines will increase further. There will also be new development trends in more energy-efficient gearboxes. For example, almost all models will adopt a “start-stop system” in the future, lightweight technology, and optimized aerodynamics will play a more important role in the future.
In the future, our product line will cover almost all levels of the model, and will cover all brands of the Volkswagen Group. Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Porsche, Bentley, etc. will provide plug-in hybrids in the future. In the future, we will also provide pure electric vehicles.
