MIT and Google jointly develop button wireless sensor

The small circular Sensors developed by the two companies can be installed anywhere on ordinary clothes, and most importantly, they are particularly easy to install on buttons. SensorSnaps uses a capacitive touch sensor to detect touches and a gyroscope to detect rotation. From the perspective of the installation effect, the button that integrates the sensor does not look much different from the ordinary button.
It is reported that the SensorSnaps body weighs 2.4 grams, has a diameter of 19 mm, and a thickness of 9 mm. It consists of a BLE module equipped with nRF52832, a 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a 10mAh lithium polymer battery with a thickness of 2 mm.
In design, SensorSnaps has a custom 4-layer PCB to make it as small as possible. At the same time, SensorSnaps uses the powerful nRF52832 chip as the microcontroller and Bluetooth transceiver. In order to improve power consumption and data rate, ARM's uVision IDE is used.
In appearance, the SensorSnaps' shell is printed using a Form 2 SLA printer. It can be connected to existing buttons with screws, and cheap plastic snap kits such as those on Amazon have also been tested with the same effect.
At the same time, in terms of networking functions, the SensorSnaps network is a central node wirelessly connected to the computer and multiple peripheral nodes connected via Bluetooth. During the experiment, an Android phone and MacBook connected to the central node were used.
The research team said that the power supply is a difficult point in the entire design, and to keep the SensorSnap small, the battery space should not be very large. In order to save power, data is sent via Bluetooth only when motions such as gestures are detected. The research team said: "We optimized the power consumption of SensorSnaps so that it can work continuously for 45 minutes to 4 hours in capacitive touch standby mode."
The use of SensorSnaps is very simple. Tap to play music, double-tap to switch between volume and time modes, rotate to adjust the volume, and install on the arm to capture the movement of the arm. In addition to these basic features, SensorSnaps also supports other features, such as the rotation gesture will be reused for fast forward or rewind of audio in time mode.
Currently, motion tracking can provide physical information for sports, medical, and gesture control devices. Traditionally, optical motion tracking requires tracking of reflective markers through multiple cameras. The 9-axis IMU greatly simplifies this process by connecting to different body parts, except that The method is still cumbersome and requires special IMU kits. SensorSnaps can now be installed into existing clothing for real-time motion tracking, and the data received through the SensorSnaps connection will be sent to a computer for evaluation.
