New CIGS solar cell efficiency record

Researchers at the German Solar and Hydrogen Research Center (ZSW) announced on August 24, 2010 that they broke the new record for the efficiency of thin film copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cells.

The world record battery has an area of ​​0.5 square centimeters. Its semiconductor CIGS layer and contact layer have a total thickness of only 4 thousandth of a millimeter, making them 50 times thinner than standard silicon cells.

The researchers produced a battery with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 20.3%, which is only a fraction of the efficiency of the best polysilicon cells on the market. However, producing a battery in the laboratory is not the same as mass production. When mass produced, CIGS cells typically achieve efficiencies of about 10% to 11%.

CIGS batteries have received much attention in recent years due to their high efficiency. However, it is difficult to scale up the technology outside the laboratory because of the complexity of its manufacture.

In the next few years, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of relatively low-cost CIGS thin-film solar cell modules will increase from about 11% to about 15%.

MiaSole, one of the oldest companies in the CIGS industry, has recently announced that it will provide 7.5 MW modules for the developer juwi Solar's projects in Germany. MiaSole said at the beginning of the year that it will provide more than 20MW of products.
