On November 28th, Chen Qingtai, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, appealed to China Automotive Industry Summit Forum hosted by China Europe International Business School that China should use advanced diesel engines as a realistic technology choice for energy-saving and environmentally friendly vehicles.

Chen Qingtai said that although China began to pay attention to the development of automotive energy-saving and new-energy automotive technologies earlier, but from the perspective of scientific and technological advancement, relevant departments have put more emphasis on electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and new energy vehicles. The research and development, while ignoring the efforts to promote the upgrading of gasoline engines and diesel engines through the development of increasingly stringent fuel economy restrictions and emission standards. “The relevant parties do not seem to have noticed that China has made major breakthroughs in the international advanced diesel engine technology in the past 15 years, and it seems that the advanced diesel engine technology has been excluded from the route selection of automotive energy-saving technologies. Many places have adopted a one-size-fits-all restriction on diesel vehicles entering the city. The policy has eliminated the enthusiasm of manufacturers to study diesel technology."
In fact, in the past 15 years, China has made remarkable progress in advanced diesel technology. Compared with current gasoline vehicles, diesel vehicles have the characteristics of low fuel consumption of 20% to 30% and strong dynamic characteristics. In 2005, particulate emissions from diesel cars decreased by 91% compared with 1990. This technological advance has also completely changed the phenomenon of black smoke and vibration of traditional diesel vehicles.
