Pressure filtration of mercury paste

The washed amalgam is usually wrapped in a dense cloth and then sent to a pressure filter (squeezed) to remove excess mercury to produce a solid mercury paste (hard mercury paste). This operation is commonly called "mercury". The filter press machinery used to extract the mercury paste varies depending on the scale of production. Plants with a small production scale usually use a manually operated horizontal screw filter press or a lever filter press. Large-scale production plants use wind pressure or hydraulic filter presses. Various filter presses for mercury paste pressurization are simple in construction and can be made in the factory.

There is a vertical screw filter press with a round hole drilled in the chassis and removable. During operation, the packaged mercury paste is placed on the chassis, and the chassis and the cylinder are firmly fixed, and then the hand wheel is rotated to push the screw to move the piston down for pressure filtration. Excess mercury flows out of the circular hole in the chassis and is collected in a container at the lower part of the filter press. Then remove the chassis and remove the hard mercury paste.

Hard amalgam containing gold output filter press is about 20% to 50%. The amount of gold in the hard amalgam is mainly determined by the size of the amalgamated gold particles. In the case of larger gold particles mixed with mercury, the gold content can reach 45% to 50%. Secondly, the gold content of the hard mercury paste is also related to the pressure of the filter press and the density of the filter cloth.

Mercury recovered by pressure filtration often contains 0.1% to 0.2% gold and can be reused for mercury amalgamation. Its gold-harvesting effect is better than pure mercury, especially suitable for use in the event of a mercury plate failure. When the mercury-mixed gold particles are extremely fine or the mercury-containing paste is not dense, the filtered mercury often contains a large amount of gold. After the mercury is left at room temperature for a long time, gold will precipitate and sink to the bottom of the container.
