CSNS Accelerator successfully completed 80kW beam debugging task
[ Instrument Network Instrument Development] After several times of centralized beam debugging, on September 27th, the Chinese spallation neutron source (CSNS) accelerator hit the target beam power of 80kW and stabilized with 80kW beam power.
In 2019, the CSNS accelerator was intensively tuned for nearly 60 days in May, July and September, while maintaining the open engine. After these three rounds of adjustment, the beam power of the equivalent single pulse is gradually increased from 50 kW to 80 kW, and the absolute beam loss control is better than the 50 kW operation, which satisfies the requirements of 80 kW operation.
The most difficult part of the high-current accelerator is the control of the beam loss. In the low-power situation, the machine parameters can be gradually approached to the design value through the measurement of the machine parameters of the belt stream, so that stable operation can be achieved. However, as the beam power increases, some of the main parameters will deviate from the design value, and the actual operating parameters need to be searched and optimized through beam tuning. The smear method is one of the most important parameters affecting the beam loss. Due to the limitation of hardware conditions, in the design and installation stage, one method must be selected in the relevant smear and anti-correlation smear, according to the simulation results at that time and the foreign machine. Experience, choose the anti-correlation smear method. However, at high power, the increase in emittance is much larger than the simulation results. In the commissioning in September, CSNS creatively used the rising edge of the magnetic field of the smearing magnet for the first time in the world to achieve injection-related smearing. After overall optimization, the increase in emittance and beam loss were significantly improved, not only achieving 80 kW operation requirements. It also laid a solid foundation for the realization of the next 100kW design indicator. At the same time, during this year's tuning process, the CSNS accelerator developed a new beam measurement method that can accurately measure the bunch factor and can reduce the beam distribution in the longitudinal phase space by measurement and algorithm processing. The beam loss caused by the effect also plays a key role.
The CSNS Accelerator successfully implemented the 80kW target beam power operation index reported to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In the new round of open operation of CSNS, the accelerator will give priority to ensuring high-quality and efficient user operation, and provide more guarantees for high-level results.
